Weather

The University of Arizona is centrally located in Tucson, Arizona. Tucson is in the Sonoran Desert, and the temperatures will be in the range of 90-100 during the day and in the 70s during the evening. The humidity during the summer is typically less than 20%, so making sure to drink a lot of water while visiting is important.

Tucson is also home to summer monsoons. Monsoons bring much needed moisture and cooler evenings but also can bring, lightning heavy rain, winds and flash flooding. The monsoon season generally runs from June 15-September 30. A recent article in the Arizona Daily Star highlighted 10 things to know about this rainy season before stuff starts getting real

Attire

You can expect to dress casual (but work appropriate) most of the time.  Overly ripped jeans, short shorts and exposed midriffs are not acceptable. Be sure to bring with you at least a couple business professional outfits. We will take professional head shots and you will want nice clothes for presentations.

Recreation & Exercise

While it will be hot during the day, early mornings are a great time to exercise in Tucson. If not a UArizona student, STEP-UP will provide a membership to the campus recreation center. We do group activities such as group hikes and participate in the Beat Cancer Bootcamp. If you are limited in your physical activity, please let the program coordinator know.

Below on the left is the South Campus Recreation Center, which is large in size and gets many more daily visitors than the North Campus Recreation Center, which is pictured below on the right. North Rec. is much closer to the Health Sciences Campus than the South Rec., but is much smaller in size.

One round trip, to and from the program site, is covered by the program for non local participants. Local travel will be required and will be your responsibility. We have provided some resources below for local transportation. Every effort is made to minimize local travel and we encourage carpooling and ridesharing. Transportation will be covered for trips that require more than 15 miles of local travel (e.g. travel to the Biosphere 2).
